Students in Latvia have benefited from a two-day seminar on the Dental Faculty’s Membership in Orthodontics examination
‘We look forward to seeing some of the delegates as candidates at the sitting of the Morth in Riga in October’
Building on strong links with the Baltic Orthodontic Society, Mr Peter Durning (Consultant Orthodontist, Training Programme Director for Cardiff University School of Dentistry and RCSEd Dental Examinations Convener) was recently invited to organise a course to introduce students to the Membership in Orthodontics examination. The course was held at Stradins University Dental School, Riga, Latvia, on 9-10 April, with 28 delegates from Postgraduate programmes in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania in attendance.
As an experienced examiner, Peter spoke about how the exam has evolved, what examiners look for in a candidate’s answers, and how they are marked.
Mrs Angharad Brown (Consultant at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Honorary Clinical Teacher at Cardiff University School of Dentistry and RCSEd Examiner for MFDS), talked specifically about the clinical case presentations and diagnostic tests. The presentation included examples of cases, how to prepare the cases, form-filling and general preparation for the exam. The marking schemes were also discussed to give the delegates an idea of the expectations and pass marks.
Ms Sarah Merrett (Consultant and Deputy Training Programme Director at Cardiff University School of Dentistry) spoke about her preparation as a ‘super’ candidate. The delegates were guided through each component from case presentations to communication. They were taken on her journey as a previous candidate and were given useful tips on how to prepare, revise and where to find important literature.
There was a chance for the more ‘daring’ delegates to volunteer for exam practice; diagnostic cases, a general viva and a communication station were attempted by some of the more senior students. Those not partaking in the actual exam had the chance to observe the others. Feedback for this component was particularly positive in that – although difficult – it gave them the chance to experience the ‘real thing’!
Three examples of past candidates’ clinical case presentations were available for the delegates to browse and ample time was available for questions. Feedback indicated that the course was a success and we look forward to seeing some of the delegates as candidates at the sitting of the MOrth in Riga in October.
Hopefully, the information delivered has furnished them with the knowledge of how to prepare, what to expect, what a prestigious qualification it is and the advantages of becoming a Member of the College.
