It's a new Dean
23 November 2011

richard_ibbetsonRCSEd’s Faculty of Dental Surgery newly appointed Dean, Richard Ibbetson welcomes his new role and shares his vision and goals for the times ahead

This is my first Dean’s column and I wish first of all to pay tribute to the Immediate Past Dean, David Felix and his Vice- Dean, Ann Shearer for the stewardship of the Dental Faculty over the past three years. David summarised many of the achievements of the last three years in his column in the last Surgeons’ News (August 2011). He and Ann have led the Faculty with distinction and all Fellows, Members and Affiliates owe them a considerable debt of gratitude.

felix-d-webThe Faculty remains vibrant with continued expansion of the number of Fellows and Members. Over the last three years we have witnessed a 35% increase in numbers of Fellows and Members in the UK. The Faculty also has a strong international role and the increase in Fellows and Members overseas is even more dramatic, at 45%. Our total membership now stands at over 2,500.

Dr David Felix provides his regular update on the Faculty of Dental Surgery, including news on dental examinations and on collaborative links with Colleges of Dental Surgeons abroad

Membership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Historically, the Faculty has delivered a Membership in Surgical Dentistry predominantly in the UK and, at the same time, has provided a Membership in Oral Surgery examination in several centres overseas (Cairo, Hong Kong and Riga).

The scope of these two examinations was quite distinct. Typically, the syllabus for the examination held overseas reflected what was regarded locally as the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, although it is recognised that this is quite distinct from the scope of OMFS in the UK.
