 Held from 1-3 September, ‘Doing the Best for Children: Are We Up to Date?’ was the first joint meeting of the RCSEd’s Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) and the American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD)
The opening session was devoted to Early Childhood Caries (ECC) whereby Dr Paul Casamassimo (Ohio) provided a sound base for reflection and discussion on the psychological and social impact of ECC, which was followed by Dr Dafydd Evans (Dundee), who discussed the Scottish family-centred management approach to treat and prevent ECC.
Dr Stephen Wilson (Cincinnati) and Professor Marie Therese Hosey (London) presented options for the management of children who need sedation from an American and UK perspective. Oral manifestations of nutritional deficiencies was presented by Dr Catherine Flaitz (Texas) and the restorative management of children with dental anomalies by Miss Kathryn Harley (Edinburgh) were also considered.
The final session did not disappoint; Dr Dennis McTigue (Ohio) spoke about new treatment options for ‘lost cause’ immature incisors whilst Dr Peter Day (Leeds) promoted the need for dento-alveolar injury triage and clinical pathways to manage crown and luxation injuries.
Dr David Felix commented: “The event provided a forum for exchange of views on a number of important clinical topics between specialists in paediatric dentistry from both the UK and the USA. Overall, the meeting was a great success and I hope that this is the first step in developing an ongoing partnership with the AAPD.”
