Thursday, 24 November 2011

The Third World Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) held in Singapore from 14-17 July, sponsored by RCSEd, was attended by 673 delegates from 51 countries

Themed ‘Yin and Yang: Balancing Cure and Consequences’, the Singapore meeting attracted international delegates from various fields of expertise including head and neck surgeons, otolaryngologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dental surgeons, pathologists, radiation and medical oncologists, experts in oral medicine, as well as basic scientists in the field of oral oncology.

The four-day meeting was a dynamic conference that aimed to bring participants up-to-date with new discoveries and progress in oral oncology.

The first day featured instructional courses on topics ranging from head and neck reconstruction to robotic surgery. The second day marked the official welcoming of the delegates by Professor Jatin Shah, Chairman IAOO’s Council, with the succeeding days of the congress showcasing poster and oral presentations from the delegates.

The best oral clinical presentation was awarded to Dr Sarbani Ghosh Laskar from India, while the best oral scientific presentation was given to Dr Frank Leusink from the Netherlands. The best clinical poster was given to Professor Yoon Woo Koh from Korea, and the best scientific poster was won by Yoshihiro Morita of Japan.

The event concluded with a closing address from Professor Christopher Goh, Chairperson of the local organising committee, and with an invitation to the fourth IAOO Congress, which will be held in Rhodes, Greece, May 2013 (www.iaoo2013.com).
