Jeanette Robey reports from the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland Annual General Meeting, held at the new BT Convention Centre, part of ACC Liverpool, from 18 to 20 November 2009
Following the opening lecture from Professor Andreas Adam, President, Royal College of Radiologists, the conference featured courses, lectures, and device demonstrations. A new attraction for this year’s delegates was the Endovascular Innovations
Workshop.
During the symposium on aneurysm controversies, talks were held about EVAR, the IMPROVE Trial, and a Quality Improvement Framework for aortic aneurysms, and presentations were delivered on lower limb revascularisation and vascular trauma at the joint symposium with the British Society of Interventional Radiology.
A highlight was the presentation from Professors Michael Dake, Michel Makaroun and Roy Greenberg, from the USA, in a symposium on aortic surgery. Other lectures included Professor Hazim Safi (Texas, USA) on the ‘Legend of Dr Debakey’, and Professor Cheng on the development of endovascular surgery in Hong Kong and China. The prestigious Kinmonth Lecture was presented by Dr Roy Greenberg on ‘Perspectives on the Future of Vascular Surgery and Aortic Interventions’.
One of the meeting’s talking points was a controversial debate on whether major vascular surgery should be performed in centralised specialist units. In other sessions, delegates heard about the Society’s plans for vascular specialty status, carotid trials, the diabetic foot and treatments for venous disease.
