The American College of Surgeons has made huge contributions to healthcare over the last 100 years, but its core mission remains the same, writes LD Britt
As the American College of Surgeons (ACS) prepares for its centennial anniversary in 2013 (the College is a relatively young organisation if comparisons are made with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh), the first order of business was to reaffirm the commitment that ACS has to quality care and patient safety.

For some years now, The Vascular Society has been seeking a higher profile with our political masters and regulatory authorities. Much effort has gone into lobbying agencies within the Department of Health, Parliament and the GMC, many of whom were not aware that the specialty existed, or if they were aware of its existence, thought it had something to do with the heart.

As the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka (CSSL) celebrates its 40th Anniversary, we look back with pride at our achievements over the past four decades. We currently have a membership of 400 and moved to our present premises – The Nora and Noel Bartholomeusz Foundation – in 2003. A newly-built auditorium with seating capacity for 300 was commissioned last year, and we now conduct all our lectures and workshops at the new premises.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) was formed in 1988 from an amalgamation of the Faculty of Ophthalmologists and the Ophthalmic Societies of the UK (OSUK). The RCOphth sets and promotes high standards in ophthalmology through comprehensive engagement with all Deaneries and regions in the UK. The College Council comprises elected representatives from each geographical area of the UK, ensuring a broad and balanced input.
